Baron Hill

City: Seymour
Occupation: U.S. Representative, IN-9

Roles

Controversies

  • Endorsed Barack Obama for President in the wake of the Jeremiah Wright controversy.
  • Flip-flopped on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), eventually voting for passage of a watered-down bill (H.R. 3685) that did not include gender identity within its scope.1
  • Flip-flopped on State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SHIP) voting against the program expansion, then voting to override the president's veto. 2
  • Ever fearful of being on camera, Hill cancelled attending an event called "a Declaration of Peace for the war in Iraq", after finding out the event was to be recorded and broadcast on public television. 3

Campaign Finance

As of 06/30/2008 with total receipts of $1,708,316, political committees contributed over $1,106,800, with only $287,024 being contributed by Hoosiers. 4

Negative Campaigning

Baron Hill is running the generic Democratic ad attacking former U.S. Rep. Mike Sodrel for supporting the privatization of social security. A YouTube clip of Hill at a town hall meeting in 2004 makes clear that he likes the idea of privatizing social security, noting that he worked for Merrill Lynch before being elected to Congress. More importantly, the ad misrepresents Sodrel's position on the issue.
