  • Biographical Information

Dennie Ray Oxley II was born December 22, 1970 in Huntingburg, Indiana. As a member of the Indiana State House of Representatives in House District 73 since 1998, Oxley has served as Majority Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, Vice Chairman of the House Elections and Apportionment Committee, and as a member of the Rules and Legislation Procedures Committee and the Financial Institutions Committee. Concurrent to his position in the Indiana House, Oxley was also a project manager with Beam, Longest and Neff. Currently Oxley is running full-time for Jill Long Thompson’s Lieutenant Governor, having resigned his position with Beam, Longest and Neff in June 2008 in order to devote more time to campaigning.1

    Voting Record

    • Voted to take away the right for taxpayers to initiate referendums against school construction projects deemed too expensive.2
    • Supported an expansion of gambling by voting to allow slot machines at race tracks.3
    • Voted for a pay raise for legislators4
    • Oxley repeatedly refused to provide any responses to citizens on the issues through the 2008 Political Courage Test when asked to do so by national leaders of the political parties, prominent members of the media, Project Vote Smart President Richard Kimball, and Project Vote Smart staff.5

    Controversies

    Legislative Ineffectiveness

In a campaign speech, Oxley asserted that “every bill that has come through the House of Representatives over the last six to eight years, where [sic] I have served as the Majority Whip, I have had my finger prints on every bill…”6 However, during his ten year tenure in the Indiana State House of Representatives, Oxley has introduced 51 bills, of which 33 received no hearing, 12 received a hearing but failed, and only six were passed into law.7

    Nepotism

Due to Oxley’s inability to run for both the position of Lieutenant Governor and for his House seat, Oxley’s father, Dennie Oxley Sr., is running for Oxley’s current seat. Insiders speculate that this move is calculated to allow Oxley to retain his seat if Jill Long Thompson’s gubernatorial bid fails, by Oxley’s father resigning and Oxley being reappointed thereafter by precinct committeemen.8
